This is the pre-filter the Merlin-Garden Pro comes with. It is a 5 micron carbon block that can filter out sediment, chlorine, and other contaminants. It can not filter out dissolved minerals like calcium, magnesium, & iron. If you have high amounts of these, you may need pre-filtration for the Merlin-Garden Pro with a softener. This carbon pre-filter will give you approximately 1,500 of Reverse Osmosis water, depending on inlet water quality.

This is an optional pre-filter for the Merlin-Garden Pro for those on non-chlorinated water sources such as a well or spring. It is a 10 micron sediment filter that will remove silt, rust, sand, etc. and should be changed every 3 months, depending on the inlet water quality.

The Merlin-Garden Pro comes with two of these RO membranes elements. As long as you keep the pre-filteres clean or your inlet water is not beyond the recommended parameters, these should last 2-4 years. When it is time to replace them, you need to get a pair.
